Originally designed in 1930 by Scottish Architect Stanley Nelson Sercombe this Grand Old Dame of Durban: Ambassador House was conceived as a residential building. In 2016, during large scale external restorations the first floor became home to Curiocity Backpackers; their first expansion into Africa (their Maboneng branch opened in 2013).
Externally, the team steered away from structural change on the building's facade, thus preserving its Neoclassical Style embellishments and crafted detail.
Internally, the goal was to accentuate the simple rhythms, materials and spaces through the introduction of considered furniture, fixtures and choices of palette.
